Bishop Darius Ashlock and I met on a Friday afternoon last November in front of a Denny's restaurant. I was walking around passing out business cards for my Financial Services business and he asked me for a card. I gave him a business card and right away I said my elevator speech with so much enthusiasm and energy. He asked me, "Why are you filled with so much energy and enthusiasm?" I responded, "It's God, I am filled with the Holy Spirit." The Bishop was highly impressed with my answer as he had never met a young lady who loved God so much. Given that we were standing literally in front of a Denny's, he asked me if I may join him for a cup of coffee. Now, keep in mind he is a stranger, but something inside me said it was okay, so I accepted, and boy, how much did I learn from this business man! I shared my vision about how I want to change the world and help as many people as I can and to make a long story short, he is now one of my mentors who continuously teaches me how to grow my mind and expand my knowledge.
The Bishop taught me how to read, write and understand legal contracts, make business decisions, develop a mental toughness, identify my weaknesses and strengths, the power of prayer, and so much more! The list can go on and on and on about all the things he has taught me in such a short period of time. However, the most valuable lesson I have learned from the Bishop is speaking with conviction, knowing what you want, and knowing that you will get it if it is aligned with God's will. I have never ever ever met anyone who speaks with so much conviction. For example, he does not BELIEVE he can achieve his goals, he KNOWS he will achieve his goals. He is absolutely fearless because he has so much faith! He is focused and truly dedicated to identifying ways to make this world a better place. He has the heart of a champion and what makes him so special is that he GENUINELY cares about people.
Bishop Darius Ashlock received an Honorable Discharge from the United States Army. Over the years, Darius developed superior negotiating skills and became a passionate entrepreneur. Being a fervent entrepreneur, his success spanned a vast array of careers. He went from working with music and promotion, to starting his own Mortgage Banking Company, a Construction Development Company, a Commodities Investors Team and much more. Furthermore, Bishop Ashlock began successfully assembling teams of financial institutions to consult on various multi-million dollar developments, to include residential and commercial REO packages, a theme park, and other joint ventures for his clients. His desire is to provide community initiatives that will enable individuals and groups the ability of working together to create and invest in projects that benefit the public. Also, to provide services that benefit the community in areas like improving economic conditions, reducing poverty, revitalizing neighborhoods, healthy lifestyles, sustaining food systems, business, financial literacy and overall creating a foundation for family, community and human well-being.
I had the opportunity to interview the Bishop and ask him a few key questions that may help you as you continue your journey to success. Now, if you are successful and you are reading this, please message me so you can be featured on my next blog! Enjoy!
#1. WHAT IS YOUR PASSION? “My only passion is pleasing God” and that by saving children and encouraging family. I believe families and children are under attack like never before and the failure of families and children is the failure of our great country.”
#2. WHAT IS THE SECRET TO YOUR SUCCESS? “Being from a place filled with racial negativity, economic oppression and depression, forced welfare, generations of poverty, gangs, drugs, crime, police abuse, and ignorant bullies that are agents of GENOCIDE, prayers and dreams have been the success in my life”.
#3. WHO ARE SOME MENTORS WHO HAVE ASSISTED YOU IN YOUR PURSUIT OF SUCCESS? This list may take years to share, because so so so many have been a major tool in my success. First my Heavily Father God and Lord Jesus Christ; then my family that have prayed for my success. Next we have business partners that have prayed for our success and keep the vision. All the civil rights leaders that have walked for peace and that are standing on the front lines of justice for us all. In business leaders, I really appreciate Sam Walton, Warren Buffet, Ted Turner, Bill Gates and leaders that create jobs, and community. But I believe none of this would be possible without the many soldiers that give it all for us.”
#4. WHEN YOU WERE AT YOUR LOWEST POINT, DID YOU FEEL LIKE QUITTING? “Great question; YES, but then what, giving up may just mean one had never counted the cost from the beginning of the journey. The race is not given to the swift or strong but to him who endures to the end. Wisdom says pray no matter what it looks like, I say amen.”
#5. WHAT KEPT YOU GOING THROUGH THE TOUGH TIMES AND HOW HAVE YOU CONQUERED YOUR FEARS ON THE WAY TO SUCCESS? “I say Prayer, praise and worship in what God's word says about trusting in the Lord in everything we do. Also, knowing that I Love Jesus, I remember that I can DO ALL THINGS through CHRIST who strengthens me. No matter what it looks like, the Lord will make a way ‘amen.”
#6. WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO SOMEONE WHO WANTS TO BE SUCCESSFUL BUT SIMPLY DOES NOT KNOW WHERE OR HOW TO START? “I remember graduating from the hardest nursing program in the US Army and having my platoon leader tell me, I know you have been a great black soldier for 11 plus years, but that white private over there with just six months in the military is going to be your next leader. WOW! Mind you that private had not gone through any required training and surely was not qualified as later he failed out of the program, but still my platoon leaders racial hatred continued preventing my promotions even though I was qualified, had all the training, but no one to report the issue to at the time. I realized then, you’re only a victim when you let others control your destiny. Never give up on you. NEVER!”
